The IWA has warned that the current tally of 28 women AMs is poised to fall to 20 or fewer at the next election. Already labour have chosen men to replace two retiring women. The near-50% number of female Assembly Members could drop below 30% in 2011 amid retirements and changes in party selection procedures. There are also a few women in very marginal seats.
IWA Women group chair Professor Laura McAllister said Wales was "in danger of retreating to its traditional male dominance of politics and public life as a result of many assuming the battle is won on gender equality". She added: "There is an underbelly of discrimination in all aspects of Welsh public life as regards gender, amongst other things."The figures for Wales and the National Assembly actually belie some pretty awful statistics in other fields."Only eight of our 40 MPs are women and half of those were selected through all-women shortlists."Only a quarter of our local councillors are women, 90% of our council leaders are men: "This idea that there's a meritocracy is quite abject nonsense." Stern words indeed
But what’s happening, are the women not coming forward, no say the parties, but the ones who are being pushed are party hacks and constituencies are not having it. That fair enough, remember Maggie Jones, hey she got her reward she is now in the Lords
What do the high profile women do to encourage other women, very little that I can see? When was the last time Lady Kinnock, or Elin Jones or Angela Burns or Kirsty Williams visited constituencies and rousted the troops .....Ummmmmm
Having worked with Joan Ruddock et al to ensure training and mentoring was available for women when I was in the Labour party, I didn’t see much of that move out of the South East of England.
It is not a level playing field and we have to ask ourselves why this is a never-ending story. May be like the fairy tale we need the Orin to help us out and see why half the populations fails to get half the seats to run the place. May be it needs changing from male club to a modern place of business, national business. How quaint would that be? And its not about buildings its about mindset and realising the need to mobilise the talent and skills women have
I quote Kirsty Williams -She said the Lib Dems had "rejected any form of positive action for women" and were "taking softer measures" to encourage gender balance. "We've established a diversity fund, which helps women financially if finance is a barrier to seeking selection as well as looking at individual mentoring schemes and we've changed our selection process by which people are approved as candidates...[to make it] very much skills-based rather than experience-based," Any evidence this is succeeding ?

So what try how many disabled AM's you have, with we are told well over 500,000 people in Wales having some form of serious disability illness how many AM's do we have, I cannot be bothered anymore with people moaning we do not have this or that, fact is I will vote for the best person, if that person for say labour is not good enough in my mind I will vote for somebody else, my allegiance to Labour has gone.
Myfanwy Davies (Llanelli) will be a good politician. She stands a good chance of winning, especially if those Labour voters switch sides or stay at home.
Kirsty Williams: "... which people are approved as candidates...[to make it] very much skills-based rather than experience-based."
Oh really - so why are the Lib-Dem ranks swollen with people with public body experience? How many heavy duty private sector people and engineers or private sector scientists are on their team?
Wales suffers from two main problems that i can see when it comes to getting more Women politicians.
A lot of women who AM's and MP's are not exactly good role models for other women looking to go into politics, and at a local level Wales is still a very male dominated society and hostile to women candidates, how you get around those problems is a problems no one has yet found the answer to.
good point anon , thats why I asked for some evidence from them , but obviously either no Lib dems read my blog , or there isnt any evidence to back the statement up
Well firstly it is worth noting the the Welsh Lib Dem group in the Assembly has been gender balanced since 1999 without any positive discrimination. The evidence of selections in our party is that where a woman has been shortlisted then in two thirds of those contest she will be selected. Our problem has been getting women to that position which is why we need to concentrate on enabling and training. There are far too many Lib Dem all-male shortlists.
It is also worth pointing out that unlike Plaid and the Tories we do have a female MP. We also have elected Parliamentarians who have worked in the private sector. Lembit Opik is one. Mick Bates has been both a farmer and a chemistry teacher. There is a wide range of experience in them UK Parliamentary party.
It is also the case that key candidates in Wales have private sector experience including Swansea West and Newport East.
Personally i welcome more women as politicians. They are better to look at for a start! Of the 9 that
voted to annul the badger cull , 7 were women. Only cool dudes Huw Lewis and Peter black voted to annul it. The rest of the assembly members are bloodthirsty B....
It's all about representing the Welsh people . This means more ethnic diversity, maybe a disabled person but it's doubtful whether any of the parties could bear the humiliation (in there eyes), definitely more from the private sector! People look at it male or female..I look at it public sector or private. If we had more from the private sector it would give a more virulent assembly for sure.
Things seem to be cyclical. Generally in UK twenty years ago there was a surge of women politicians on the back of Maggie Thatcher. We had Barbara Castle as well on the oppposite bench. Then John Major kept the balance with his appointments.
Not sure what went on in Wales but recently fewer women are appointed in England at the moment - strange!
Whilst writing there is something of a challenge going on at my place regarding the famous railway staion in Anglsea:
Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch
Is there any way of us learning how to say it whilst keeping our false teeth in place?
Best wishes

The fact remains "Lib-Dem ranks are swollen with people with public body experience". Peter Black being one.
can i just reply to Peter blogger here VM...it was not a lib dem thing abut private sector, it was just a general observation about all parties to get more private sector people in, teachers Peter i would class as public sector
No different to any other party but this discussion is about gender balance.
It may be easier for smaller parties to have gender balance as they are often more inclusive in nature
Often the impetus is from the head,I haven't seen any comments of support from RM on this issue.By his actions he has been inclusive to women, but they have been part of his smaller circle any way
Plaid, well IWJ isn't interested really is he.Dafydd Wigley before him I would say again its not his bag.Dafydd Ellis totally different
Nick Bourne - no interest and there are no champions in the Welsh Tories
Mike German not sure
You also have to look at the influential women in the parties and also as I was told recently at the women who still support the idea that a woman's place is making the tea and supporting the men to do a mans job.
I agree that the quality of some female AMs is not good , but same goes for the men, however they do not get so targeted
It rolls on ,there are many many capable women out there who just do not consider politics.
There should be no positive discrimination - and the best candidates should be put forward irrespective of gender, race, number of limbs etc, and the public left to decide.
There are some excellent politicians out there, and some pretty hopeless ones - from both sexes.
Succesful role models are what is needed - I can see some in Plaid - and Lib Dems - nobody springs to mind in the Conservatives (apologies if I have forgotten someone) - but Labour has actually managed to find some appalling negative examples. How may teenagers would aspire to be like Irene James....
In an ideal world that would happen , but we do not live in one
Women are just not getting onto step one and there will not be through flow until the channel is supportive
Its also not just young people we want through, we want women of all ages who have the skills we need. That again is not just bits of academic paper . or a job with a posh sounding title, life skills, common sense and practical insight would serve us well
Don't you just love Peter Black and his relentless hypocrisy!
As far as female Lib Dems go, I've two words that say it all - Eleanor Burnham.....Could there be a more stupid politician anywhere on earth!
And then there's the example he gives of Lembit O'Prick.....Yup, I guess I have to swallow my words. HE's even stupider than EB.
I wouldn't uphold LO on any one front, Peter. Claiming rent on his London flat whilst living with his fiancee? Mmmm........Claiming the fine on an unpaid council tax summons, trying to get a huge TV on exes, not to mention the wigs ( and we all know what's going on there, along with his shoe fetish ) The man's a car crash in v slow motion. Not a great ad for someone with experience in the private sector, eh? And whilst at it, do let's point out that Proctor&Gamble are regarded as fairly dodgy by a fair few. Now just how much do they pay LO for training theisr staff every year? Do go look at the records, Peter, and whilst you're at it, clock how much he gets paid for his despicable sexist crap in the porno rag he writes for......
